faltering start to the station, within two days of broadcasting there were
calls to shut the station down in Parliament, advertisers also left in droves
after listening to the first day.
LBC in 1973 had hired a bunch of Fleet Street hacks that
knew nothing about broadcasting.
David Jessel the first voice of LBC, who did, had jumped ship from the
BBC to join the station.
His less than overwhelming first announcement on LBC was due
to the fact he had been violently sick in the waste bin moments before. An event that he describes as a
‘Portent of things to come over the first few weeks.’ He left a few months later and returned to the BBC.
