Reporting the Election

Welcome to a hideous minefield of cock-ups or reporting the General Election. In the UK the Representation of the Peoples Act is a rather unpleasant piece of legislation which, as far as broadcasters go, means the word impartiality and due weight has to be burned across your forehead.  This time round Emails and text messages add to the complication of getting it right in the eyes of the law.

Luckily the BBC has some very fine guidelines that are published in the public domain and I have used them and my years of experience covering general elections to produce a quick guide, My election experience includes the one in 1997 when Tony Blair was elected on a Tsunami of euphoria. It was a very successful show helped by the fact we had the whole resources of ITN to call on and Tim Crook as a well-informed impartial presenter.

If you want to know the nitty gritty use the navigation at the top of the page and click Reporting the Election
