X marks the spot

"Let's have a heated debate."  Mrs Merton used to say and I really wish that was the case for the three leader debates we have had to watch and listen.  I was though pleased last nights BBC effort was edited by our old mentor at ITN - Sue Inglish.  She was so helpful to us when we covered the 1997 election and although a senior TV exec, spent time with Chris and helped us work out how we could Produce that other extraordinary election night which gave birth to 'new' Labour.

Our stroke of luck was that ITN provided a list of all the returning officer OBs and I could pick the relevant London and national feeds.  They were mostly all clean feed, which meant no reporter suddenly cutting in.  We had to play the whole thing by ear.  Watching the TV and giving Tim Crook - who was presenting, the info in his ear while he also watched the ITV coverage.  It worked really well, I think we only had a couple of duff links in the whole night.

We all went away thinking that between the 3 of us, we had produced a first rate show.  (There was supposed to be a runner but they were a no-show) LBC 2010 coverage will again run with a small cohesive team and I expect will again give the big guys a run for their money.
