Promos/Trails and Pointers

Promos are dead, they are boring, too long and get lost amongst the ads. (The BBC like to call Promos - Trails btw)

Unless a promo is offering something to the listener, like a free holiday or a particular important reason to listen they are frankly not worth making.  I have always championed the cause of the pointer (sounds the same but does something different) What pointers do is as their name suggests point you toward the show and the presenter and when they are on.

One of the most common complaint from listeners is that they never know when their favourite presenter is on. Pointers are short simple ways of signposting and growing audience. They can also be voiced by the on air talent they are referring to.  For example.  I'm John Smith here from ten every morning on WKRP.  So please no more long tedious promos/trails, they don't work and are a waste of time.

I'm not totally in aggement with that. Sometimes promo's are of value to the listener. A specific example could be that of 'Desert Island Discs' on BBC Radio 4. Around 45 seconds but also giving the listener enough curiosity to listen to the programme...
